Independent High School QnA

It has no difference from the past, parents are always worrying everything about their children, most common thing was the further study part, from child hood to kindergarten, from kindergarten to primary school, from primary to secondary and of course secondary to A level as well as Degree and bla bla bla.

In the past family gathering with my mom's cousins, they will never miss out this topic.

"Eh Qi, are you going to taiwan to further your studies?"
"Eh Qi, studying at Chong Hwa very suffering one ah? coz idk which school should I let my children go after he/she graduate from Primary School."
"Eh Qi, how's the fee structure? is it very expensive ah?"
and so on.

I was a independent school student, I studied in Chong Hwa KL, and because I am the only one in the family that studied in independent school (before my sis), so I always have to take a deep breath, and do so much research before I join the family gathering. Nah, just kidding, but seriously, I need to know many things such as the fees and the subjects and even the exams.

okay, so I decided to make a QnA post here, maybe no one will read it or see it, but, next time when they ask me, I can just ask them to refer to my blog post. LOL. here's the question I gathered from the last family gathering.

P/S: it is just a reference, and based on my personal opinion. CHKL means Chong Hwa Independent High School.

Q1) How to get in to CHKL?
Ans: To get in to CHKL, you must prepare your child(ren)'s

  1. personal photo X1 (the one you used it on your passport)
  2. Result slip with principle's sign (Standard 5 and the 1st sem of Standard 6)
  3. Birth Cert
  4. Registration Fees (you can check it online thru their website)
Q2) How much should my chilld(ren) need to achieve if I want to let him 保送 (which is guaranteed admitted to get in to the school)
Ans:
Last time, they will refer to your UPSR result, if you achieved 4As and 3Bs, then you are a 保送生, but now, for some reason they changed their requirement, they will refer to your primary school result, the calculation will be like that,
You need to get the sum of 400 marks or above for these subjects Chinese perfahaman, BM perfahaman, Englsh, Science and Maths  from Standard 5 and the 1st sem of Standard 6
to achieve the requirement.

Q3) What if my child(ren) did not achieve the requirement for 保送生?
Ans: You can sign up with the school to take part an exam to test their ability. The result will release before the end of the year thru mail, or an article on newspaper, and also their website.

Q4) If my child(ren) is already a 保送生, does he/she need to take part the exam?
Ans: yes, they still need to take part the exam, the result of the exam is also a reference for the school side to arrange the classes for the students.

Q5) Does CHKL teaches all subjects in Chinese?
Ans: NO. at least English and BM could not be taught in Chinese.
CHKL is running 2 syllabuses, which is the government syllabus and the independent school syllabus. like Geography, you need to study Chinese version and BM version; History, as well as Science, Maths and others. But will focus more on the independent school syllabus. So for those English educated students, will be a little tough to be used to a Chinese environment.

Q6) Is it easy to study at CHKL?
Ans: well, this is a funny question. Can you give me a definition of EASY?
It depends on how smart or how fast your child(ren) can learn. Like, for me, I learn thru understanding, so for those memorizing subjects such as sejarah or moral, it's quite tough for me. But, by comparing with those sekolah kebangsaan, CHKL has higher level and requirement. Pass rate for kebangsaan is 40 marks but at CHKL, they require you to get 60%, in all subjects, which mean if you failed the subject if you scored 59%.

Q7) Is it stressful?
Ans: Seriously, I did not really feel the stress, only when I wanted myself to score higher and when my relatives will show an ugly face when they heard I get bad result, other than these situation, I did not really feel stress when studying at CHKL, or maybe I didnt require much lah. My parents did not force me to study or force me to get good grades, I sendiri will set my timetable and study if I have mood, and I only wanted to get 60% if I can, and if I get lower than 60%, I also wont give a fuck. Why so serious? Just exam what. But you must make sure your child(ren) must get an average of 55% or above, or not they will kena repitation, where they need to study that grade again.

Q8)Mathematics.
Ans: ok. Many relatives thought that my Maths is very geng coz i study in CHKL, even my colleague thought so. Come on lah, My maths is not geng at all, but in CHKL, the Mathematics subject have a higher level than outside, I mean kebangsaan. CHKL categorized into 2 parts which is Algebra and Geometric but kebangsaan have only 1, known as Mathematics, that's all. not only Maths, CHKL also categorized science into Biology, Chemistry and physic. So, your child(ren) can learn more things and gain more knowledge. sounds good leh.

Q9) Fees?
Ans: different grade have different. J.M1 ~ J.M3 is RM 370; S.M1 ~ S.M3 is RM390 (2014)
It is expensive than kebangsaan (of course -.-) but cheaper than international school(of course -.-). But in comparing with other Independent High School in KL area, I think CHKL will be the cheapest.

Q10) What is UEC?
Ans: UEC stands for United Examination Certificate. It is a united exam for all independent high school in Malaysia. The standard is higher than O level and near to A level. As I mentioned above, CHKL is running 2 syllabus, in form 5, students will take part in an exam which is SPM. After form 5, you can either choose to leave CHKL to study A level, diploma, STPM or foundation at another institute or stay at CHKL for another 1 year to study the UEC syllabus.

Q11) What is the different with UEC and others?
Ans: there are some differences,
  1. Fees: For the tuition fees, you need to pay RM390 per month for 10 minths, so you only need to pay RM3900 for the tuition fees, registration fees for the exam are not included. But for A level and Foundation or Diploma, you need to pay at least 10K for a year.
  2.  Subjects: For an art stream student, in UEC, you have to study Chinese, BM, English, Maths, Advance Maths(optional), Geography, History, Economics, Business Studies and Book keeping. NO MATTER WHAT COURSE YOU ARE GOING TO CHOOSE IN FUTURE. But, for A level, you only need to  choose 4 subject; Diploma or Foundation too.
  3.  Language: UEC is using Chinese for most of the subjects except BM, English and Book Keeping. For others, English.
  4. Duration: UEC, 10 months. Others, it depends.Standard: the standard are almost the same. Depends on which course are you going to choose in the future.
  5. Standard: the standard are almost the same. Depends on which course are you going to choose in the future.
Q12) Further Studies after UEC?
Ans: After taking part in the UEC exam, you need to wait for the result, the result will release on December. If you got good grades, you can join year one degree in any Uni or college in WORLDWIDE except local(Malaysia) Uni. Normally if you scored 5 credits (B), you had achieved the minimum requirement. If you cant get at least 5 credits, you will require to join the diploma or foundation. And, this cert admitted by most of the country even UK and US, so students studying in independent school was to trained to further their studies in neither China nor Taiwan. They can also further their studies in Australia, the UK, US or even India.

These are the questions that commonly asked by my relatives, and all based on my own opinion, of course, I done some research too.
Actually I am so proud that I was a ChongHwa-ian, although the study hour is 7-3 and they have a lot of limitation such as, you must not have long hair, you must wear the socks higher until I see the blue line, it is quite suffering sometimes, but this is a place that full of memory, a place you work hard with your friends, chit chat in the class, walking around during recess, and learn how to communicate in a society and others. I love this place and I will never forget this special place.

Sorry for my poor English, I must force myself to type in English, because English is too important. please lah, give me a chance to learn mah. LOL
